Tony Armer is the Film Commissioner for St. Petersburg Clearwater (Pinellas County) FL, an Award Winning Filmmaker and the Founder and Former Executive Director of the internationally acclaimed Sunscreen Film Festival. He works with hundreds of productions each year and in 2015 he brought the Tim Burton Film "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" to St. Pete Clearwater. In 2015 his was the first American Film Commission in the 68 year history of the Cannes Film Festival to have an International Pavilion at the event. After a successful festival run his Award Winning documentary "Running with Demons" was distributed worldwide in 2014. Tony led the Sunscreen Film Festival from its inception to an annual event in St. Petersburg, FL each Spring and Los Angeles, CA each fall.
Founded in 2005, Sunscreen was voted one of the “25 Coolest Film Festivals in the Country” by Movie Maker Magazine in 2009 and the “Best Film Festival” in the Tampa Bay area by Tampa Bay Magazine for 2012. It is one of only 23 fests in the country to be sponsored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the Oscars) for 2013-2014.
The fest regularly attracts several hundred filmmakers and top entertainment industry talent to the Tampa Bay area. Guests have included actors John Travolta, Kelly Preston, Patrick Wilson, Billy Dee Williams, Ed Asner, Ron Perlman, Producers Ralph Winter (X-Men, Fantastic Four), Sean Covel & Chris “Doc” Wyatt (Napoleon Dynamite), as well as numerous directors, screenwriters, actors, distributors, sales agents, casting directors and producers.
Tony works closely with film distributors and sales agents attending markets like Cannes, Sundance, Toronto, AFM and more. He has deep and longstanding relationships within the film industry. He has been Producing, Directing, Writing, and creating Film, TV, corporate and digital media content since 1997.
Tony is an accomplished Executive who has successfully launched and run large non-profit and for profit companies. From 1994-2000 he was the executive in charge of the Just for Feet Specialty Division’s Southern region’s 12 retail locations and 150 employees in two states. Tony managed, marketed and generated over $15 million dollars in annual sales at these locations.
Tony studied communications at the University of Toledo, he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BA in Business Management from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, FL and an MFA in Motion Pictures and Television from Academy of Art University in San Francisco, CA. He has also taught film as an adjunct professor at the Art Institute of Tampa and the University of Tampa.
